Practical, independent assessments for safer drivers and better-informed decisions

A driving licence confirms that a driver is legally entitled to drive a vehicle. It does not necessarily demonstrate how safely, confidently or competently that person will perform within your operation.

Our HGV and Van Driver Assessments provide employers with an independent and documented evaluation of a driver’s knowledge, practical ability and approach to road safety.

Assessments are available in Belfast or throughout Northern Ireland and can be tailored to your vehicles, working environment and operational risks, giving you clear evidence on which to base recruitment, training and risk-management decisions.

Who are the assessments for?

Our assessments are suitable for:

Pre-employment screening of new HGV or van drivers
Young or inexperienced drivers requiring assessment for insurance purposes
Existing drivers undertaking periodic competency reviews
Drivers returning after an extended absence
Post-incident or post-collision reviews
Drivers changing vehicle type, role or operating environment

Assessment duration

Assessments normally take between two and four hours per driver, depending on the vehicle, operating environment and level of assessment required.

What does the assessment involve?

Each assessment is carried out by an experienced, NRI-qualified HGV assessor and may include:

Driving licence and entitlement checks
Professional driver knowledge assessment
Vehicle safety and walkaround checks
Defect identification and reporting
Cab familiarisation and vehicle-control checks
On-road driving-performance assessment
Reversing and manoeuvring
Observation, anticipation and hazard awareness
Use of mirrors, signalling and road positioning
Defensive and fuel-efficient driving techniques
Highway Code knowledge
Tachograph and drivers’ hours awareness
Communication, attitude and professional conduct

The driver will receive immediate verbal feedback following the assessment. A written assessment report will normally be provided within seven working days.

The purpose of the assessment is to identify strengths, areas of concern and any further development that may be required.

The assessment itself is not practical driver training and is not automatically treated as a pass-or-fail test. Where concerns are identified, we will provide clear recommendations to help the operator decide what action should follow.

Delivery arrangements

Assessments are normally:

Conducted using the operator’s vehicle
Completed on the public road and, where appropriate, at the operating site
Delivered from your premises or another agreed location
Adapted to reflect the vehicle and duties the driver will undertake

The vehicle supplied for assessment must be roadworthy, appropriately insured and suitable for the assessment being conducted.
